SC won’t evacuate prison for Hurricane Florence

Despite governor’s order, Beaufort County schools will remain closed Wednesday

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said its trajectory continues to show that the centre of Hurricane Florence will most likely strike the southern coast of North Carolina by late Thursday or early Friday.

Jeff Byard of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) invoked a former boxing champion to warn residents that it would bring "a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast".

Though Florence won't be making landfall until Friday, tropical-storm-force winds - 39 to 73 miles per hour (63 to 117 km/h) - will begin whipping through coastal regions as early as tomorrow, making it exceptionally unsafe to be outside, Graham said.

Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for the state of Georgia: "in light of the storm's forecasted southward track after making landfall".

"The state is mobilizing all available resources to ensure public safety", Deal said.

Hurricane Florence, growing in size despite its weakening winds, churned ever closer to the U.S. East Coast on Wednesday as evacuations expanded south from the Carolinas into Georgia to counter the threat of deadly high seas and calamitous floods.

On another barrier island just below the Bogue Banks, Steve Harrigan reported live from North Topsail Beach, where visitors and residents were largely heeding warnings from Gov. Roy Cooper (D-N.C.) to evacuate.

Saturday's scheduled game between SC and Marshall has been canceled.

In Columbia, South Carolina, Barry Sparks, a 66-year-old retiree, was thinking of getting out after the path of the storm shifted to the south.

However, he reiterated that just that minor factor alone is not enough to cause the cyclone to make major changes. "Now it might be time for the exam", he said. Amazon is already preparing to do what it can for those in the storm's path.

Another joker said: 'Looks like tropical storm Floyd has penetrated Florence, we will be having a baby shower for the little sprinkle that's due in 9 months'. "Everyone was sold out", she said.

Its governor, Roy Cooper, told residents "the time to prepare was nearly over".

"Disaster is at the doorstep and it's coming in".
