Rashford on target after half-time row

England's worst ever players: Michael Ricketts, Scott Carson, Jon Flanagan and more

Comparisons with Kane and Ronaldo are possibly over the top but, in essence, Southgate is correct.

There have been claims Rashford's career has stalled at United since Mourinho took charge in 2016.

Rashford visibly grew in confidence after scoring the goal and Manchester United fans will hope this helps the young striker find form with a busy month of Premier League and Champions League action looming.

Fortunately, England managed to get through the Switzerland match without the need to call on Gazza's services.

The game was also a reminder of just how unbearable the England band are.

The England global netted 32 times in 123 games in that period, while Ronaldo managed 27 in 137 outings.

Jack Butland misplaced a pass which rolled dangerously close to his own goal, and when the goalkeeper's next clearance to James Tarkowski was cut out by the Swiss high press, Xherdan Shaqiri should have scored rather than striking the post on his weaker right foot. At United, Rashford has Romelu Lukaku in his way at centre-forward and Alexis Sanchez occupying the left flank. It's not actually my business to interfere with club managers. He's a huge admirer of him, but he's got his job to do.

"We had a tactical problem to sort out and so many lads playing their first 45 minutes of the season", he added of the first-half display.

Rashford has started two games for United this season and will miss the next three - starting with Saturday's away Premier League fixture at Watford - after being sent off in the match against Burnley.

"It was a short break with no preseason and everybody was back earlier than I am sure everybody would have expected for club matches, although that is entirely understandable", Southgate told reporters on Monday.

'If we had everybody available for the games I would be delighted, ' he said. "We are hoping that now we have given them some minutes they will go back to their club better prepared for when they get their opportunity and it gives them a better chance of staying in the team. The more his confidence has grown, he's stepped into the England set-up and it looks like he's been a part of that set-up for years".
