Djokovic dismisses Del Potro to win U.S. Open

Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, holds the championship trophy after defeating Juan Martin del Potro, of Argentina, in the men's final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, in NY. Another game point for Djokovic when Delpo nets a backhand on the run early in the point, but Djokovic overcooks a backhand and we're back to deuce (No 6 for those keeping score).

Over the past eight weeks Djokovic has resembled the player that held all four major titles at the same time in 2016 and the $3.8 million ($AU5.3 million) winner's cheque lifted him above Federer as the leader in career prize money.

Ever since being stretched to four sets in his second round against Tennys Sandgren, Djokovic did not drop a set, demolishing the likes of Federer-slayer John Millman, Kei Nishikori and del Potro en route to the top step of the podium.

Novak Djokovic celebrates his US Open 2018 victory at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Some two hours after the match, del Potro walked out to the players garden to a greeting from his group of about a dozen friends who have led the cheers from his box, supporters from back home he has credited with keeping his spirits up during the depressing days when he was injured. Serena was crying. Naomi was crying.

"I was hoping he's [Pete Sampras] going to be here tonight but I want to say 'Pete, I love you, you're my idol".

"I don't feel sad that I couldn't win Grand Slams because of them. Thank you", Osaka tweeted.

The 13th-seeded team of Barty and Vandeweghe knocked of the No. 3 and No. 1 seeded teams en route to their first Grand Slam doubles title as a team.

Djokovic, Del Potro set for clash of styles in US Open final

The Argentine put his admiration aside Sunday and made it hard for Djokovic to gain an edge, despite the score of the first set.

"The second set was a milestone".

Vandeweghe, niece of former National Basketball Association star Kiki Vandeweghe, became the 17th American woman in the Open era to win the tournament title. But winning at Ashe is as big as it gets.

"I will try to make the surprise again".

The tournament, thereby, came to a conclusion for this year amidst controversial circumstances which have dominated the headlines since Saturday's women's final.

Even his rival for the US Open title, 13-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, has a hard time rooting against del Potro, the 2009 US Open victor who has painstakingly rebuilt his career after years of wrist injuries threatened to derail it.

Juan Martin del Potro stood with his hands on his knees, exhausted from taking the mightiest swings he could with his ferocious forehand.

He is now set to rise to third in the ATP rankings behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, the only two men to have claimed more slam titles, but can justifiably claim to be the best player in the world at present.
