Spain destroy Croatia 6-0 in Uefa Nations League clash

Asensio could become one of Spain's greatest – Odriozola

Elsewhere, Belgium play their first competitive game since securing third place at the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over England in Group A2, as they travel to Iceland, in one of six games available to watch on Sky Sports Football via the red button.

Uefa named Luka Modric as its player of the year less than two weeks ago, but the Croatian captain could not muster up his usual commanding performance for his team, who may still be feeling the impact of a tremendous, yet exhausting, World Cup.

Sergio Ramos, one of the remaining members of Spain's golden generation, added the fifth goal with a header off a corner kick in the 57th minute, and Isco closed the scoring in the 70th after another set up by Asensio.

Ten minutes later Marco Asensio made it 2-nil with a powerful shot.

Asensio, who was not among the starters against England, also set up Rodrigo's goal early in the second half with a ideal through ball behind the defence.

Croatia's biggest defeat had been a 5-1 away loss against England at Wembley in 2009.

Croatia will hope to get their first Nations League points when they host England next month.

Dalic's men did play a friendly on Thursday night, drawing 1-1 with Portugal as Ivan Perisic and Pepe exchanged goals, but he has to deal with several team changes since the World Cup.

"That's why we want to win every match, but we are playing against a Spain team which didn't meet their expectations at the World Cup and are highly motivated now".

Spain made three changes to the team that won at Wembley, bringing in Valencia defender Jose Gaya and Real Madrid pair Dani Ceballos and Asensio.

After this game, Croatia will host England in their next Nations League match on Friday 12 October.

Tuesday's match in Elche marked ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique's first home game as Spain manager, and his second win in as many matches since taking over La Roja reins in July.
