England goals important for Marcus Rashford - Southgate

Loftus-Cheek, who has become the canary in the mine for England's youth development pathway, had played only 33 minutes for Chelsea this season prior to kickoff, while Delph was making his first appearance of the campaign.

Manchester United forward Rashford gave the Three Lions an early lead at home to Spain on Saturday before they fell to a 2-1 Nations League defeat. "He's had three days of little training, so half-an-hour was ideal to keep him ticking over".

Gareth Southgate has said that England have only produced one World Class midfielder in the last half-a-century - Paul Gascoigne.

The security provided by the presence of three central midfielders behind him enabled Shaqiri to roam wherever his little legs wished to carry him, and he popped up all over the pitch in the first half. "The gaffer had a stern word with us and in the second half it was much better".

"Before I got in the players were trying to sort things out", he continued.

Southgate also praised his players for the way they attempted to rectify their own problems themselves at the break in Leicester. We want to have an environment that's demanding because that's the only way we can keep raising the standards.

"We expect that, we encourage it".

"We talked a bit after the World Cup about the demands of the modern player", he explained.

After going down at home to Spain on Saturday, the English were out to end off their global break on a high.

"I don't think he should have been here for the two weeks".

While England had an impressive summer campaign at the World Cup, defying all expectations to reach the semi-finals over in Russian Federation, they did so with a relatively young and inexperienced side.

"I imagine Croatia are having similar difficulties".
