Passengers fall ill on 2 flights from Europe to Philadelphia

The emergency services are seen after the passengers were taken ill on a flight from New York to Dubai on JFK Airport New York U.S

As many as 100 people reported feeling ill during Emirates Flight 203, with health workers evaluating them as the plane sat on the tarmac of JFK International Airport.

The office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday said a passenger plane had been quarantined amid reports that a large number of passengers on board were ill. "Nine passengers underwent additional medical screening at the site near the aircraft and were released afterwards", said the spokeswoman for Dubai-based Emirates.

"Test results on the 10 hospitalized patients find influenza", press secretary Eric Phillips tweeted Thursday.

The New York Police Department's Counterterrorism Bureau said they were monitoring what appears to be a "medical situation" at the airport.

The group of illnesses comes a day after 10 people were hospitalized and tested positive for influenza after arriving by plane in NY from Dubai.

Emirates said in a statement Wednesday that three passengers and seven crew members were taken to a hospital for medical care and evaluation.

The flight, which originated out of Dubai, made a stop in Mecca, which is now experiencing a flu outbreak.

Numerous healthy passengers described hearing fellow travelers violently coughing during the flight. They had their temperatures taken on the tarmac and were then transported by bus to the airport terminal, where they made their way through customs.

Ambulances were on hand to transport sick passengers, Phillips tweeted.

Emirates Airline did not immediately respond to Ars' request for comment or updates.

USA media reported that around 500 passengers were on board the flight.

Erin Sykes, who was on the plane, wrote on Twitter that the trip was "basically a flying infirmary" and questioned why some of the passengers were allowed to board.
