Gretchen Whitmer, a former leader in the MI state Senate, captured the Democratic nomination for governor Tuesday night and will face off against the state's Republican attorney general, Bill Schuette, in a race that looms as a pivotal test of whether Democrats can reclaim power in a state President Donald Trump won two years ago.

While the Michigan GOP's statewide ticket will be led by Schuette and Senate nominee John James, who are backed by Trump, it is still taking shape and could include women.

Democrat Gretchen Whitmer has defeated two other candidates in the primary and will move on to the November general election.

Whitmer, the first-ever female leader of a MI state Senate caucus, beat back challenges from former Detroit health director Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and chemical-testing entrepreneur Shri Thanedar.

It is still possible that Whitmer chooses a male running mate for lieutenant governor. Patrick Colbeck and Dr. Jim Hines in the GOP primary. "Michigan was the place that people used to move to from all around the world", she said, adding that at a time when some people want to build walls, "we in MI are going to get back to building bridges".

"Whatever differences we may have, it is my hope starting tonight that we can unite in our common goals - more jobs, greater growth and bigger paychecks for MI families", he told backers in his hometown of Midland.

Michigan, where Republicans have controlled state government for 7½ years, is an important gauge of whether Democrats can make gains in the upper Midwest after Trump won the state in 2016. She said while the president's party typically faces rough sledding in his first midterm election, Michigan Republicans have a better record of getting out the vote than Democrats do.

He likes Trump but said the president's endorsement did not sway him.

"I like balanced budgets".

Schuette also thanked his competitors in the Republican party for their commitment to the state and their service to MI. He pointed to his June poll of likely November voters that showed 57 percent were extremely interested in the election and extremely motivated to vote, but among Democratic women it was 67 percent. Whitmer also won slightly more than half of the Democratic votes, while El-Sayed received more than 30 percent to Thanedar's 17 percent. And either Republican business executive Lena Epstein or Democratic former auto bailout chief of staff Haley Stevens will succeed a retiring congressman in suburban Detroit.
