Redskins Rookie Derrius Guice Out For Season With Torn ACL

11-ON-11 PERFORMANCES

Initially, the Redskins were optimistic that Guice had only sprained his MCL, and the former LSU star was in good spirits after the game, telling reporters, "all is well".

Guice left at the end of the first quarter of Washington's preseason opener Thursday night against the Patriots after he was tackled following a 34-yard gain that was negated by a penalty.

Beyond Kelley, Thompson and Perine, the Redskins have Kapri Bibbs, Byron Marshall and undrafted Martez Carter as running backs in camp.

The injury is devastating news to the Redskins, who drafted Guice to fix their 28th-ranked run offense from 2017. Now there's a fresh wound - and a massive one - early in the 2018 season. ACL tears typically take at least six months to recover from and the track record of being the same player has been mixed. But there are other running backs, such as Ronnie Brown and Edgerrin James, who were never the same after the injury. The team announced the prognosis Friday following an MRI, saying Guice should make a full recovery and be ready to play in 2019.

Brady, the NFL's reigning Most Valuable Player, turned 41 on August 3 and is entering his 19th season.

Washington has also had a recent history of their high-profile draft picks not being able to stay healthy.

Brady has two years remaining on his contract.

Tom Brady, Quarterback, New England Patriots, and Founder of TB12, speaks at the Milken Institute 21st Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California, U.S., April 30, 2018.

In addition to Guice, the team says tight end Manasseh Garner, a long shot to make the roster, is out for the season with an ACL injury.
