Trump tackles Russian lawyer claims head on

President Donald Trump speaks during a rally Thursday Aug. 2 2018 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes Barre Pa

On July 27, Trump said on Twitter that "I did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr", in response to reports that his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, was ready to tell authorities that Trump had known.

Trump's morning Twitter post was his most direct statement on the goal of the meeting, though his son and others have said it was to gather damaging information on the Democratic candidate.

He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!" A July 2017 statement dictated by the president read: "We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago". "Nobody's pointed to one". Trump's morning Twitter post was his most direct statement on the goal of the meeting, though his son and others have said it was to gather damaging information on the Democratic candidate.

Trump, on a working vacation at his New Jersey golf club, began Sunday with a series of searing tweets. Veselnitskaya wanted the meeting so they could talk about lifting Russian adoptions and possibly lifting sanctions if Trump were to win the election, while Trump Jr. expected useful information against Clinton.

Later, Donald Jr said he had accepted the meeting hoping to get dirt on Mrs Clinton but he said nothing came of it.

President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday that the 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with top Trump campaign officials and a Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer was to get information on his opponent Hillary Clinton.

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow nevertheless attempted to rationalize the 2016 meeting as legal in an interview Sunday on ABC's This Week.

Sekulow added that he has "no knowledge" of whether federal investigators are probing one of the attendees of the meeting, Donald Trump Jr., even as critics charge that the secretive discussion might have run afoul of campaign finance law.

What did President Trump say? The veracity of which is challenged by campaign finance law that states it is illegal for a foreign national to "directly or indirectly, make a contribution or a donation of money or other thing of value".

Sunday's tweet was Trump's clearest statement yet on the goal of the meeting, which has become a focal point of Mueller's investigation even as the president and his lawyers try to downplay its significance and pummel the Mueller probe with attacks. They purposely cause great division & distrust.

"I made a mistake in my statement", he said.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Rubin's latest Right Turn column on the Washington Post featured even more comments about Donald Trump's recent Twitter admission, and how it could lead to his prosecution.

In another, he expressed frustration with both the media and Mueller's probe.
