Weld County man hospitalized with West Nile Virus

Connecticut towns in which WNV-infected mosquitoes have been detected as of Aug. 2

The West Nile Virus has been detected in numerous states, including New York, California and Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has announced the first reported death of 2018 associated with the West Nile virus.

"Mosquito-borne diseases overall are increasing", CDC spokeswoman Kate Fowley told weather.com.

Urban areas are more likely to have mosquitoes that carry WNV. Spraying clothes with repellent will give extra protection - seeing as some mosquitoes bite through clothes.

Symptoms of the viral disease vary from person to person, the CDC noted.

"In recent years, when one human case occurs in an area, other cases often follow in the same part of the county", Fairfax officials said. A rare number of people can experience more significant symptoms.

"Historically, August and September are the months of greatest risk for acquiring West Nile virus infection", said Dr. Theodore Andreadis, director of CAES. Last year, there was one non-fatal human case.

"The symptoms are the same as that of Japanese Encephalitis or Meningitis". Do not forget to drain water from tires, cans, flowerpots, clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, toys and puddles.

The Department of Public Health and Wellness has also advised residents to mosquito-proof their homes by installing fix screens to keep the insects outside, using an air conditioning system, and emptying standing water.

Be sure to check screens for holes and run the air conditioner when you can.

"Public Health thanks the community for being diligent in removing standing water and eliminating the places where mosquitoes can breed", Callanan said. The use of mosquito nets can be useful at night, particularly for infants.
