OnePlus Phones are Insanely Popular in India

As usual, Samsung remains at the top of the pack, despite its shipments falling 10 percent YoY to 71.5 million units.

IDC notes that Apple will likely move back into the number two spot following the release of its 2018 iPhone lineup later this year.

And, remarkably, this overtaking manoeuvre has taken place despite the global smartphone market falling 1.8 per cent in shipments overall. Huawei raced into the second spot selling 54.2m phones in the quarter, up 41%, for a 15% share of the market.

The embattled Chinese phone maker shipped 54 million handsets in the quarter, an increase of 41 percent over a year ago, researcher Canalys reported. Samsung captured 34 percent share of the premium segment while Apple 14 percent, its lowest ever.

Selling millions of cheap phones has worked well for Huawei in the Asia Pacific region, where its sales more than doubled compared with the same quarter previous year, according to IHS Markit.

OnePlus began as a daring challenger and took only a few years to morph into the victor, leading the premium smartphone market here in India in the whole of the last quarter, April to June, 2018. The firm said the uptick is partly due to its strong sales of its latest flagship phone, the P20, and its Honor sub-brand model, which accounted for two thirds of its $16 million revenue jump in the last quarter.

Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, says that in most markets worldwide, Apple, Samsung, and Huawei are the major players in the ultra-high end ($700+) competition.

Meanwhile Apple seems to be struggling to grasp the Indian market the same way it does here and other western countries. Still, shipments of the S9 duo fell 25% compared to the S8 duo from the same period a year ago (you can see the Q2 2017 peak).

The overall smartphone market continued its slowdown with shipments slipping 1.8 per cent for the quarter to 342 million units.

Despite Apple being historically weak in the second quarter, analysts described the rise of Huawei as significant. Apple's iPhone 8 and iPhone X are not now in vogue as we're a few months away from a new launch, and Galaxy Note 9 is coming at the start of August - so that leaves OnePlus 6 to clean up, really.
