She looks set on facing down hardline Brexit supporters in her Conservative Party who are livid over her plans to negotiate a "free trade area for goods" with the EU.

With less than nine months left until Britain is due to leave the bloc, May is sticking to her plan for a "business friendly" Brexit.

Trump has long voiced his support for Brexit, saying it was part of a global uprising that ultimately thrust him to power, and he was at his Scottish golf resort the day after Britons voted to leave the European Union, saying the outcome was a "great thing".
