Netflix Adds Smart Downloads Feature To Android App

Netflix isn't yet ready to automatically predict and download shows or movies that you might want to watch, reports Quartz.

The company said the aim of the new downloading features is to remove the hassle of navigating through files and deleting download episodes manually. So after you have watched an episode or two of a show that you have downloaded, the application will recognize this and delete them the next time you are connected to a WiFi network.

Smart Downloads is initially available on Android phones and tablets.

"You watch, we do the work", summed up the post, which is attributed to Cameron Johnson, Director of Product Innovation. "Whether it is smart downloading or viewing a mobile preview, we realize the best part of Netflix is connecting with the stories you will love in an easier and more fun way".

Smart downloads are one-for-one. This changed back in 2016, though, when the developers finally added the feature to their Android and iOS devices worldwide.

Essentially, Netflix subscribers will now have increased control over their entertainment experience and the Smart Downloads feature is entirely optional to use. If you don't like Smart Downloads, you can turn it off from the Settings menu as well. Episodes that are slightly longer won't take up more storage space, Netflix says, because of the way Netflix encodes, or converts the video, for mobile.

Interestingly, Netflix Smart Downloads has been in trial for a limited number of users for some months now.
