Instagram adds group video chat and redesigned explore tab

While Instagram remained tightlipped on the development, it foreshadowed the rollout of video calling at the beginning of May.

Instagram today announced that it is rolling out several new features including Video Chat, topic channels in Explore, and new camera effects for Stories.

A new video chatting feature and explore page isn't the only thing the photo-sharing app is rolling out with. These work to customize Stories with AR-based camera effects. All you need to do is go into your inbox, tap on the camera icon, and the call will alert your friends' phones.

Video Chat allows you to start with one member, and as more people join the chat, the video will expand to show as many as four members at one time.

Instagram previewed the new video chat feature last month at Facebook's developer conference, but now all users can take advantage of the new feature that lets you connect with friends whether they're on iOS or Android. That starts with video calls, which supports one-on-one or group calls up to four people.

While you're video chatting you can minimize the video and do other stuff on Instagram. Simply tap the camera to join in the ongoing video call. To update your video chat notifications, tap the gear icon on profile and find the new video chat control in Push Notifications. At the top, you'll see different sections to choose from. They allow you to be more intentional about how you navigate posts in Explore.

The Explore section is being revamped with Topic Channels. There's a new For You channel which essentially combines the best posts from your interests, and then the other topic channels that consist of other posts. If you'd like to remove a topic channel, press and hold the channel and select "Mute' from the menu".

Instagram added some new camera effects too.

Instagram is also adding camera effects designed by partners, starting with Ariana Grande, BuzzFeed, Liz Koshy, Baby Ariel and the National Basketball Association. "Whether you want to make your friends laugh or add some glam to your selfies, you now have more ways to express yourself and feel closer to your favorite accounts". You'll see a new effect in your Instagram camera if you follow any of these accounts - just tap the face icon at the bottom right corner.
