Even Mohamed Salah can't stop Egypt from spiralling out of World Cup

Plane carrying Saudi Arabian team en route to next World Cup match catches fire mid air

Saudi Arabia, who suffered a minor scare when an engine on their plane caught fire before landing on Rostov-on-Don on Monday, instead have not found the back of the net in their last four World Cup outings.

A victory may cement Uruguay's position as the group's leader, lining it most probably for a tough second-round clash against Spain or Portugal.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, RUSSIA-With a single goal, Luis Suarez settled the fate of four teams in the group stage of the World Cup.

Suarez, who was kicked out of the last World Cup for biting an opponent during a match, knocked in a corner kick from Carlos Sanchez in the 23rd minute for his 52nd goal for his country in that century of matches. Overall, it is, of course, a disappointing World Cup for both nations but they will both be looking to finish on a high and, moving forward, will want to give their fans something to cheer about.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Cavani came close to emulating Suarez by scoring in a third World Cup, but his low shot was smothered by the onrushing Al-Owais.

Tabarez's preference for old hands Sanchez and Rodriguez, who play their football in Mexico and Uruguay respectively, may raise questions about the next generation of players in the squad, which is comprised of 10 players aged 30 or more, double the number that reached the semi-finals in 2010.

The Saudis, however, will look to stay alive, but they'll need to come up with a vastly better showing than they had in the opener against Russian Federation, a 5-0 loss.

Suarez has now scored in three consecutive World Cups.

In the end, Uruguay managed to hold their nerve in the closing stages to grind out a 1-0 win that secures their spot in the round of 16.

Cavani almost made it 2-0 for Uruguay with a solo run through the opposing defence but his attempt was blocked by Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais.

Taisir Al-Jassim limped out of the match in the 44th minute with what appeared to be a hamstring injury after over-stretching for a ball at the top of the box.
