The latest from Singapore: Trump predicts ‘terrific relationship’ with Kim

Dennis Rodman looks out at the court at the end of an exhibition basketball game with U.S. and North Korean players at an indoor stadium in Pyongyang North Korea

Before the announcement, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo seemed to hint that the outcome of the talks might not be what Trump has promised in the past.

Rodman has no official role in the diplomatic efforts between his country and North Korea, but he appears to be invested in promoting positive ties between Washington and Pyongyang.

If things fall apart, it could be because "Trump presents Kim with a hard-and-fast binary choice: relinquish nuclear weapons and live in peace and prosperity, or cling to them and risk the impoverishment of your people and the safety of your regime", Haas said.

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that had happened, Pompeo said.

He said if diplomacy fails to move in the right direction, the sanctions "will increase".

Kim Yong Chol's rise has baffled many North Korea watchers because he is the ruling Workers' Party official in charge of South Korea ties, not global or US relations.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation to discuss final preparations for the meeting. Trump tweeted earlier in the day.

Kim smiled broadly Sunday evening as he met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. US officials have said a best case scenario would be that it serves as a launching pad for negotiations that would provide Kim with physical security and his closed off nation with economic assurances in exchange for irreversibly dismantling his country's nuclear capabilities.

His first stop was a waterfront park with futuristic installations, Gardens by the Bay, which boasts the largest glass greenhouse and tallest indoor waterfall in the world. He also hosted Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

On the way back to his hotel, Kim walked along a promenade near the Merlion, a giant statue, and fountain, of a mythical creature, half lion, half fish - Singapore's unofficial mascot.

The rapid improvement in relations between the North and South Korea - technically still at war - culminated with a historic leaders' summit in April.

The young Kim is reviled as an global pariah over the 2017 murder in Malaysia of his half-brother, and the execution of hundreds of officials, including his uncle, for suspected disloyalty.

Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore hours apart Sunday.

"I feel really great", Trump said.

Against a backdrop of USA and North Korean flags, the two first shook hands for about 12 seconds, and Trump at one point grabbed before leading him toward another room where they are scheduled to meet one-on-one, with just translators present, for about 45 minutes. They are being housed at the Formula One pit building in the city centre, while Trump stays in the Shangri-La and Kim at the St. Regis.

For both men, the summit, the first between leaders of North Korea and the United States, is likely to be a defining moment of their careers.

A successful summit could also herald momentous changes in the security landscape of northeast Asia, in a similar way to how the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 changed Europe.

He reiterated that the goal of the summit remains the same: "the complete, and verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
