Merkel: G-7 summit with Trump was a 'sobering' experience

Hours after Mr Trump withdrew his support for the joint statement and attacked Mr Trudeau, Mr Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro drove the message home on Sunday morning news shows in an extraordinary assault on a close USA ally and neighbour.

"First of all, we'll try and see if we can prevent this".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Saturday that all G7 members had endorsed a joint communique.

Trump, who is in Asia for meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, tweeted that "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal" and suggested that Canada is "bragging" in an unspecified release about benefiting from USA trade.

"Justin acts hurt when called out!" the U.S. president said in his latest Tweet.

"The U.S. pays close to the entire cost of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - protecting many of these same countries that rip us off on trade (they pay only a fraction of the cost - and laugh!)", he tweeted. Trump has raised the issue most forcefully, however, regularly taking Berlin to task over the military budget and Merkel said he "had a point".

Trump finished his tweet tirade with: "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!"

Mr Trudeau's office responded by saying he had "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president" and vowed to abide by the G7 final communique.

Trudeau called the fact that the United States had based the tariffs on a national security reason "kind of insulting". A Madawaska, Maine, mill pumps pulp from the Canadian side of the border to be made into paper on the U.S. side.

The communique was supposed to illustrate shared ground between the US, Germany, the UK, Canada, France, Italy and Japan following Mr Trump's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

"We spend two days working out a (joint) statement and commitments".

"We commit to modernize the WTO to make it more fair as soon as possible".

The EU then announced retaliatory tariffs on USA goods ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to bourbon.

Merkel said the G7 leaders had agreed to review their trade ties and assess the scope of existing tariffs in order to avoid further trade barriers. The Kremlin has denied allegations by the United States and some European countries that Russian Federation interfered in their elections. "They know it", he insisted in his departing news conference. "You know, it's like the gig is up".

"On the issue of trade, we have been able to agree on important questions to us", she added, stressing that it was "important to have a commitment to rules-based trade". The document also supports strong health systems, advancing gender equality, ending sexual and gender-based violence, as well as efforts to create a more peaceful world and combat climate change.

The German leader's commanding presence and Mr Trump's defiant posture immediately caught the Internet's attention and the photo was quickly turned into a hilarious meme.

But after negotiators for all seven countries crafted a final communiqué that even the reluctant United States delegation agreed to, Trump abruptly lashed out on Twitter from Air Force One on Saturday night.

Canada and European countries condemned the United States for its "insulting" tariffs, and the latter in response refuted Canada's "false statements", following the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Quebec, Canada.

Trudeau got direct personal support from some European leaders.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed retaliatory action next month over United States tariffs on steel and aluminium.

"International cooperation can't depend on anger and small words", France's Élysée Palace said in a statement. We are sticking to them and whoever reneges on them is showing incoherence and inconsistency.

Other members of the Group of 7 stood with Canada against Trump.

Trudeau was speaking at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron when the apparent eyebrow mishap occurred, with pictures appearing to show one eyebrow unusually lower than the other.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members, in general, make financial contributions based on their economic output, and as a result of being the world's biggest economy the United States does contribute a larger amount than other nations. And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace?
