China may become ‘guarantor and mediator’ after Trump-Kim talks

The Kim sit-down comes as Trump's combative style of diplomacy has been on stark display this weekend in Canada during the annual Group of Seven summit.

"Prime Minister Lee welcomed Chairman Kim to Singapore".

But Trump - for whom a major accomplishment would bolster his position ahead of midterm elections in November - baffled observers when he said he did not think he had to prepare "very much" for the summit.

As he looks to the Kim meeting, Trump is taking a high-stakes risk in hopes of containing the increasingly challenging national security threats from North Korea's advanced nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Asked by Stephanopolous whether Trump deserves credit for brokering the first meeting in recent history between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, Menendez said he is anxious Trump "thinks this is a mano-a-mano engagement in which he can achieve the success we want".

The city-state's foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan tweeted a picture of himself shaking hands with Kim at Changi Airport, and the North Korean leader was driven into the centre in a stretch Mercedes-Benz limousine, accompanied by a convoy of more than 20 vehicles.

There was speculation throughout the day over whether Kim Jong Un had taken his private jet- an Ilyushin IL-62M - from Pyongyang, but official photos released by the Singaporean Ministry of Communications and Information showing Kim meeting Balakrishnan on the tarmac appear to reveal that he flew to Singapore aboard an Air China Boeing 747.

When asked how he feels about the summit after landing in Singapore on Sunday afternoon, U.S. President Donald Trump said, "Very good".

Earlier on Sunday evening, Trump arrived at Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base and is now staying at the Shangri-La Hotel. "So at the moment, the wisest approach for China is to just leave North Korea and the U.S. to it".

Like the real-life leaders, fake Kim and Trump are no strangers to controversies of their own.

The comment can be dismissed as casual optimism characteristic of the USA leader, but the watchers interpreted it as suggesting that the atmosphere in their last-minute negotiations on denuclearization may not be discouraging.

Kim Jong Un arrived in Singapore on Sunday for the historicec U.S.

"From our point of view it's important that the meeting take place, and that the meeting sets developments on a new trajectory - one that will be conducive to the security and stability of the region", he said.

This will be the first summit of its kind between a leader of North Korea and a sitting USA president.

Tensions flared between Trump and USA allies over his protectionist economic policies and decisions to exit the Iran nuclear deal and Paris climate accord. No other politician in the USA could have had a summit because no one has ever recognized North Korea as a proper nation.

Later, Kim met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at Lee's office in the sprawling palace known as the Istana.

Mr Kim said "the entire world [was] watching" while Mr Trump said he had a good feeling about the summit.

Another possibility from the summit is a possible deal to end the Korean War.
