Assad: stability is growing in Syria

Russian President Vladimir Putin meets President of Syria Bashar Al Assad in Sochi Russia on 17 May 2018

The Syrian presidency released a handout showing the two leaders meeting.

"The Syrian president has made the decision to send his part of a delegation to form the Constitutional Committee that is to work on Syria's constitutional law".

During the official meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated him on the great success in the fight against terrorists, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, APA reports quoting Sputnik.

The latest round of Syria peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana wrapped up on Tuesday, but did not however make any concrete progress towards ending the seven-year conflict that has cost 350,000 lives.

"After the military success (of the Syrian army in recent months), supplementary conditions have been created which favor the start of a political process on a major scale", Putin said in a statement after the meeting.

Despite the possible bumps down the road, Assad said he would stay committed to all political efforts.

Russian Federation is a key ally of Assad and has provided support which has allowed the Syrian regime to make territorial gains in recent months against rebels.

It said the two also discussed economic cooperation and growing investments by Russian companies in Syria.

Moscow launched an air campaign on behalf of Assad's forces in 2015 that tipped the conflict in his favour. He also visited Putin in Moscow in October 2015, soon after Russian Federation launched its military operation in Syria. More than 450,000 people have been killed and 11 million have been displaced from their homes. The opposition and its Western backers have demanded he step aside as part of a political transition, something the Syrian government has adamantly rejected.
