Sunday's Twins-Angels pitching matchup a must-watch battle of rookies

Angels drop another tough one to Twins this time in extra innings

Despite dominating on the mound, April's American League Rookie of the Month did not get the win at Angel Stadium, but his efforts were not wasted after Zack Cozart secured the victory with a walk-off single.

Mike Trout almost cost the Angels a key run, unwittingly, with his speed and aggressive baserunning in the seventh inning Saturday night, but his Matrix-like elusiveness on a slide into third helped his team pull even with Minnesota. Minnesota then strung together three consecutive hits, including an RBI double by Byron Buxton and an RBI single by Joe Mauer.

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout was not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Twins.

The 23-year-old former Nippon Ham Fighters star in the Japan League used his deceptive slider to induce eight of the 20 swinging strikes he managed with impressive work from his fastball and breaking ball as well.

Sidearm-throwing Trevor Hildenberger opened the bottom of the 11th by hitting Cozart with a pitch.

Yet Ohtani was denied his fourth win after he left to a standing ovation following Logan Morrison's nine-pitch walk in the seventh.

"As advertised", Minnesota manager Paul Molitor said after his club's first look at Ohtani.

Angels reliever Keynan Middleton threw just 12 pitches in the eighth inning, heading to the dugout with a 1-1 count on Rosario. Castro was placed on the 10-day disabled list last Saturday. Unfortunately, we didn't get that hit here or there when we needed it. He struck out two and made 87 pitches.

Maldonado had two hits and a walk for the Angels, scoring the game's first run on Justin Upton's groundout in the fifth inning.

Twins: Jake Odorizzi (3-2, 3.83 ERA) takes the mound when they return home for a makeup game against Seattle. The right-hander has 38 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings this season.

Monday: The Angels face the Houston Astros at 10:07 p.m.at home.
