Manuel Neuer in Germany's 2018 World Cup Provisional Squad, Gotze Misses out

Arsene Wenger

Joachim Low has extended his contract as Germany head coach until 2022, the German FA (DFB) announced on Tuesday.

"We had to make a decision, and it was made in favour of [Mario] Gomez and Petersen", Low said.

Injured Manuel Neuer was named in Germany's extended 27 man pre-World Cup squad on Tuesday, but there was no place for Brazil 2014 victor, Mario Goetze.

They went on to reach the semi-finals of the next two major tournaments before becoming world champions in 2014. He wasn't able to show his incredible quality.

Of this squad list, four will be cut for the final group before the World Cup kicks off in June.

"He has great intelligence in the game and in the second half of the season he was in really good form".

Mario Gomez could add to his 73 caps in Russian Federation, having previously played in Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012 and Euro 2016.

Loew also opted to stick with the experienced Mario Gomez as his second-choice striker behind Timo Werner and picked Freiburg's Nils Petersen ahead of Sandro Wagner.

Neuer returns to the global fold despite missing most of Bayern's latest title-winning campaign with a broken foot, though Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi and Liverpool midfielder Emre Can are among those to miss out along with Gotze.

Both midfielders Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan are included despite triggering friction between Berlin and Ankara after the Premier League stars posed for pictures with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in London.

Germany face Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in World Cup Group F and will prepare in the Italian Alps ahead of the tournament in Russian Federation.
