DC United confirm Rooney talks

GETTYJose Mourinho managed Wayne Rooney at Manchester United

"Lampard, [Patrick] Vieira. now you have Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], you have Wayne, so I hope he enjoys [it]", Mourinho said.

The talented forward originally left his boyhood club in 2004 as an 18-year-old before spending 13 glittering seasons with Manchester United, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2008.

"In MLS, you have always some iconic players that are going to end their careers there", said Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who coached Rooney in his final season at Old Trafford.

DC United are now rock-bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference table with five points from seven games.

"You would need at least two players to be at the 15 mark and you need the midfielders and wide players to be in the sevens to 10s".

"There have been rumors about Wayne going overseas - China or America".

DC United boss Ben Olson has confirmed interest in Wayne Rooney but insists the deal to take him to MLS is not yet done.

Allardyce is open to allowing the striker to leave the club at the end of the season and revealed that talks between Rooney and D.C. United have been ongoing but he is yet to inform the club of his decision.

However, chairman Bill Kenwright is convinced that the deal would be a poor decision from Everton, and the Mail reports that his concerns have created the kind of doubt amongst the Toffees board that could see the club now ask Rooney to reconsider and stay on Merseyside for another year.

Sam Allardyce, meanwhile, has said that Rooney has not asked to leave but would not stand in his way if he wished to do so.

The Englishman is well loved by the club's supporters but his class doesn't impress many others who perhaps don't watch him on a regular basis.

"The next level of recruitment has to be quality players to get into the team and make them better than what they are at this moment in time", the manager admitted in a press conference.
