Ekweremadu reacts to IGP Idris snubbing Senate invitation for third time

Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris

"If an appointee of the President will refuse to honour invitation of an institution, it is unfortunate".

Idris had been summoned to address the Senate on the alleged inhuman treatment of Senator Dino Melaye during his arrest and detention by the police over alleged gun-running; and the spate of killings by armed herdsmen and militias across the country.

The IGP's action will be seen as a slap in the face of a federal legislature struggling to bolster its reputation among Nigerians.

Idris was first summoned on April 25, but he failed to appear, rather sent a DIG to represent him at the Senate, noting that he was on an official assignment to Bauchi with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senate issued a third summons following a suggestion by the Senate president, Bukola Saraki.

The upper legislative chamber also declared him a "great danger" and enemy of democracy. For the last time, the Senate invited him to appear today. But two minutes later, Ayewoh returned to the chamber without the IGP. But Senator Dino Melaye refused to honour the Police invitation.

Senators took turns to condemn the IGP's action.

"Clearly, the IG is not here".

"It is very unusual for a public servant to act like this". I personally feel that public officers should do what is in the interest of the public.

"I personally feel that public officers should do what is in the interest of the public and where any public officer can not do what is in the interest of the public, there is no need for such an officer to continue to occupy that kind of position".

According to Moshood, the police is the first defender of democracy in Nigeria.

Sen. Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP-Taraba) said it was a sad moment for democracy. It is inexcusable, unacceptable and condemnable, and calls for immediate action. "I have never see this before anywhere in the world, we need to take a decision because this affects security in the entire country".

" We can say that what he is doing is anything but an abuse of this institution, the federation and himself even in the eyes of the worldwide community".

"The delegated Officers went with a brief of the Inspector-General of Police on the matter to the Senate to enable the Senate appreciate the issues raised to guide their resolutions on the matter, but the Senate refused to listen to the Officers delegated by the Inspector-General of Police in line with his powers recognized by both the Constitution and the Police Act and Regulations".

"The National Assembly insisted again that he must come in person".

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police, yesterday, cautioned applicants undergoing screening for the 6,000-recruit positions not to offer bribes to any officer or individual.

"Official functions of the IGP can be performed by the DIG or the Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs)".
