Arsenal face Atletico Madrid in Europa League semi-finals

Diego Simeone expressed his pride after Atletico Madrid booked their place in the semi-finals of the Europa League despite a 1-0 defeat to Sporting Lisbon.

They will play the first leg against AS Roma at Anfield on Tuesday 24 April, before the return leg in Italy on Wednesday 2 May.

Diego Costa and Lucas Hernandez were injured as Atletico Madrid booked a place in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

The match-ups were decided on Friday afternoon.

The Europa League champion will get direct entry into next season's Champions League.

They did prevail 6-3 on aggregate, but not before being given a scare.

Diego Simeone's side are now second in LaLiga behind runaway leaders Barcelona.

He added: "We live with the reality and that is the Europa League".

Arsene Wenger saw his side put in a nervy showing against CSKA Moscow in their last outing on Thursday, with two late goals required in Russian Federation to put that encounter to bed.

French team Olympique Marseille will play against Austrian Salzburg, while English football heavyweights Arsenal will face Spanish club Atletico Madrid in semi-final stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, Marseille progressed after dumping RB Leipzig out of the competition, winning the tie 5-3 on aggregate.

Now, this is a tournament that means much more to Arsenal, Marseille and Red Bull Salzburg when it comes to next season.

The final in Lyon will provide extra incentive for Marseille as they will look to lift the European trophy on Ligue 1 side Lyon's home soil.
