PM Modi finally breaks silence, says 'our daughters will get justice'

Congress hits out at PM Modi's planned fast says protest is a farce

After facing scathing criticism over his silence on the horrific Kathua and Unnao rape cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday finally made a statement on the issue and called the rapes a "shame". What do YOU think about the growing violence against women & children? 2.

The Opposition party has also alleged that the accused were being "protected" by the authorities concerned. Rahul Gandhi echoed the sentiment but demanded accountability from the government yesterday at a midnight candlelight march in Delhi. "This is a national issue and not a political one", said Gandhi as Congress leaders and workers marched towards India Gate before police dispersed them.

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, senior party leaders Salman Khurshid, Ahmed Patel, Ashok Gehlot, and Ambika Soni also took part in the protest.

She was sedated and repeatedly raped before her head was smashed and her body thrown in the forests next to Rasana village.

The Congress leader said the BJP can inaugurate as many memorials as they like, "but the fact is that they are reducing sub-plans, financial allocations".

"Join me in a silent, peaceful, candlelight vigil at India Gate at midnight tonight to protest this violence and demand justice", he said. "We are all ashamed as a society, as a country". He said Modi's slogan of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" was a correct slogan.

In January, an eight-year-old girl went missing while grazing horses in Rassana forest in Kathua. By 11 pm, the party office was teeming with people, as over 3,000 cadres from Delhi and nearby areas turned up.

He said Modi's silence over the rising atrocities against women was "unacceptable" and that India was waiting for him to speak up.

At the rally at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, protesters expressed fury at the ruling party's refusal to take decisive action in the two rape cases and BJP ministers' defence of the accused in the Kathua case. There were even discussions whether the PM was trying to shield BJP members who are the culprits in both the cases.

The Congress on Friday distanced itself from High Court Bar Association (Jammu) president BS Slathia, who has been spearheading protests, demanding CBI probe into the Kathua gangrape-cum-murder case and deportation of Rohingyas. The J&K Police have arrested 8 culprits in connection with the crime.
