Cauvery row: Kamal Haasan urges Modi to deliver justice to TN

GoBackModi Chennai erupts in protest as Modi visits to attend a defence exhibition

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Chennai visit has created a lot of uneasiness in the city.

He said: "Please do the needful as our Prime Minister and set up the Cauvery water Management board to ensure implementation of Supreme Court order in letter and spirit".

The Cauvery, which flows through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, is the third largest river - after Godavari and Krishna - in south india and is considered the lifeline of Tamil Nadu and Southern Karnataka.

"Good morning sir. My name is Kamal Haasan". This is an open appeal to the Prime Minister. I think with your previous experience with Narmada water board authority. Both pundits and pedestrians alike suspect and believe that this delay in us getting justice is due to the elections in Karnataka and your interests in it. Sir, I am sure you are aware of the crisis that is gripping Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water.

The BJP is in the fray to take back the Karnataka government from the Congress. I want this belief to be dispelled.

Taking to his Twitter handle, the Makkal Needhi Maiam Chief said, "People are more important than elections". "You must form the CMB to provide justice to the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka", he said.

It is worth noting that the Centre had sought a clarification from the Supreme Court on its 16 February order regarding the formation of CMB asking for three months for implementing its judgment in view of the May assembly elections in Karnataka. In the video that runs for a little over a minute, Kamal Haasan, speaking in English, appeals to Modi to deliver justice to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on the Cauvery issue.

Last week, however, hearing Tamil Nadu's contempt petition, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre to frame a draft scheme by May 3.
