Manny Pacquiao to fight Lucas Matthysse without Freddie Roach

Manny Pacquiao To Return On July 14

Signed, sealed, and delivered: Proud to officially announce that WBA welterweight world champion Lucas Matthysse will put his title on the line against Manny Pacquiao in Kuala Lumpur, Malyasia on Saturday night July 14.

"It's on! Can't wait to challenge Lucas Matthysse for another world title on July 15 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - July 14 United States time #Pacmanisback", wrote Pacquaio. Pacquiao will also enter the ring this time without longtime trainer Freddie Roach, as he's been replaced by longtime friend Buboy Fernandez.

"It serves as a big motivation for me to train and fight hard to win the crown", added Pacquiao, who has won eight world titles in a record eight weight divisions.

Pacquiao is coming off a WBO welterweight world title loss to Jeff Horn in Australia back in July of 2017.

Another landmark date was set yesterday with the annoucement that the all-Filipino world title fight between champion Jerwin Ancajas and mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan will be held on May 26 at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas.

Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs), 35, won the vacant secondary welterweight title with an eighth-round knockout of Thailand native Tewa Kiram in January.

Asked about the reason Pacquiao chose to make a change - without notifying Roach - Koncz said, "There was some concerns Manny had in the last fight and some statements Freddie made to the media that Manny wasn't very pleased about".

After Pacquiao's painful defeat, Roach had intimated that it could be time for his prized ward to consider retirement.

The bout will be a promotion between Manny Pacquiao and Golden Boy Promotions, with Top Rank although not directly involved, securing the ESPN TV spot for the bout.

Since there is a 12-hour time difference between Kuala Lumpur and the US East coast, the world championship will be held in morning in the Malaysian capital, he added, similar to what was done in the Horn-Pacquiao bout a year ago. "They've (Top Rank) done good to us for a long time and we've done good for them for a long time".

One reason Pacquiao could be working with Arum on the PPV and North American distribution of the Matthysse fight, could be due to wanting a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko.
