Brother of charter bus crash victim believes "God was watching over" them

Driver killed Texas students hurt in Disney trip bus plunge

First Class Tours, which operated the bus, said in a statement that the bus was carrying students home from Orlando, Florida, and the company is cooperating with investigators.

About 45 people from Channelview High School were on board the bus when it plunged down a 50-foot ravine in the middle of Interstate 10, about 20 miles east of Mobile, early Tuesday morning. First Class Tours, the company that owns the bus, said Caligone was a long-time driver with the company.

Frances Dodson-Benson said her 15-year-old son DeWayne Benson, a sophomore who plays bass clarinet, used a borrowed phone to tell her he was OK.

"This has been an extensive rescue operation", he said.

"A charter bus transporting Channelview High School band students was involved in an accident on Interstate 10 in Alabama early this morning".

The bus was carrying 40 students from Channelview High School in Texas and six adults, the Channelview School District said in a statement.

Authorities confirmed the driver had died, while one person was in a critical condition and at least five others were seriously injured.

Around 60 first responders were on the scene of the crash, Loxley Fire Department Chief Lovell said.

Numerous families are on their way from Texas to reunite with the children, members of Channelview's band who were returning from a spring break trip to Disney World.

Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Major Anthony Lowery said the bus ran off the highway before dawn.

The bus plunged into the ravine between the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-10 at about 5:30 a.m., Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Hoss Mack said at a news conference. "I'm grateful I wasn't, but at the same time I'm very anxious and concerned over them", Montalongo said. Medical officials said at least 37 people, majority teenagers, were treated at hospitals or other facilities in Pensacola and southwest Alabama for injuries that ranged from minor to very serious. Baldwin County officials say emergency personnel located and evacuated the passengers of the bus. He said he is keeping the driver's family in his prayers. The other bus, we do not believe was involved.

"The next thing we needed to do was get blankets up here", he said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott offered his condolences over the crash. "In fact, it's in route to Texas as we speak".

The interstate was closed in both directions as recovery efforts were underway and will remain closed while authorities investigate.
