Until the most recent military intervention by Turkey, Afrin had been relatively calm during the Syrian civil war, as local government and militias started their own political project and defense strategies against other insurgent and Islamist groups, becoming a safe spot for Syrians fleeing from other regions.

According to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, the Turkish Army and Turkey-backed armed groups have seized control of over 38 percent of Afrin's villages, but the siege is yet to be completed. It is part of the wider territory known as Rojava, held by Kurds and their allies.

Erdogan asked. "We came in response to the calls on Afghanistan, Somalia and the Balkans, and now I am making the call, let's go to Syria".

Erdogan said on Sunday Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels were now just four to five kilometres from Afrin. Erdogan also denounced North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on Sunday, accusing the Western military alliance of failing to back Turkey's campaign. NATO, Turkey is not a NATO country? The PKK is considered to be a terrorist group not only by Turkey, but also by the USA and the EU.

Turkey's objective has put it in direct contrast to U.S.'s objective of building a force to stabilize the region.

The military intervention came after the USA said it would set up a 30,000-strong militant border force at Turkish doorstep. The document, however, only stated that the ceasefire did not apply to such groups as Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS), Al-Qaeda and Al-Nusra front, and did not describe any Kurdish militias as terrorists.

However, it remains to be seen if the US allows Turkey to continue with its offensive or intervenes to protect the force that is vital to maintaining control of huge swathes of ungoverned Syria. A report in Aljazeera says that residents of Afrin plan on creating a human chain to protect YPG fighters against Turkey's assault on the city.
