Children, 1 Pregnant Woman Die From Flu In Tennessee

Health officials are still urging people to get vaccinated against influenza despite questions about the shot's effectiveness

Seventeen more flu deaths have been reported in North Carolina this season.

Horry County also saw modest drop in its number of flu cases.

At this point a year ago, the flu had already claimed 214 lives in Washington, Wood said.

"In public health we obsess about the flu".

This week, 372 lab-confirmed cases and 18,000 positive rapid flu detection tests were reported by public health and clinical labs bringing the season totals to 2,384 and 97,407 respectively.

The flu season normally runs October through May. Over the past seven days, that number fell to under 1,000 cases for the first time in nearly a month. Children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk from the flu.

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and Southeastern Regional Hospital restricted visitors in late January because of the flu.

The 10 other flu deaths in DE have been attributed to underlying or chronic health conditions. For the last nine weeks, influenza has been geographically widespread across the state.

Many of this winter's flu-related deaths are related to outbreaks at institutions like long-term care homes. According to the report, out of the 3,400 hospitalizations, over 1,800 were seniors over the age of 65 and over 400 were minors.

The influenza virus causes an infection in the respiratory tract, or nose, throat and lungs. "Vaccination is still the best protection we have against this serious and deadly illness", said Tennessee Department of Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH. "Not speaking to these individual cases, we see very few children who have fatal flu have been vaccinated", she said.

Those seeking flu shots can do so by setting up an appointment at the Myrtle Beach Health Department or Horry County Health Department by calling 1-800-868-0404.
