Honda Accord wins vehicle of the Year

This morning the 2018 Honda Accord was crowned 2018 North American Car of the Year.

The Accord took home the prize for top auto, while the XC60 and Navigator were recognized as utility vehicle and truck of the year respectively.

The awards are meant to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. Arcangeli calls the Accord "new from the ground up", with more coupe-like styling and its first-ever turbocharged engines.

2018 marks the third win in a row for Honda.

In the truck category, NACTOY Juror Ron Sessions of the New York Daily News said, "the 2018 Navigator received a more dramatic update than its Ford Expedition sibling and its impact for the brand will be stronger as a result". The Volvo XC60 and Honda Civic both took top honors in 2016.

The Lincoln Navigator was completely re-engineered for the first time in the model's history.

"Like the XC90, the XC60 offers Volvo's distinct brand of luxury and it may even be more appealing than its bigger brother", said juror Kirk Bell, a freelance auto writer.

The brand sold only 10,523 Navigators a year ago, far behind competitors in the segment such as the Cadillac Escalade.

To be eligible for the awards, a vehicle had to be new or substantially changed for the current year. The vehicles were judged based on factors including innovation, design, safety, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.

Each of the 60 jurors had 10 points to award in each of the three categories. The winners of the 2017 awards were the Chevy Bolt EV, Chrylser Pacifica, and Honda Ridgeline.
