The doors, hood, and tailgate are made from aluminum while the fenders, roof, and bed utilize high-strength steel. There are now 21 tie-down points, twelve of which are fixed in the corners - each capable of handling 500 pounds, twice what the current model can deal with - and nine of which are movable.

"We selected the right material for each application and optimized every component for mass, durability, safety and function, all to meet the needs of our customers", Reuss said.

A mix of materials are used to optimize weight and capability.

Inside there's more interior volume thanks to the increased length. That strategy is demonstrated most noticeably in the truck's body, frame, and suspension. The sensors that were once integrated into the taillamps have been repositioned to the rear bumper so that there are no dead spots in the 2019 Silverado's lamps.

There's even an optional power tailgate that can be operated from a button on the key fob, a button in the cab, or a button on the tailgate itself. The handle on the tailgate will also open and close it automatically.

There are six different versions available, spanning from entry-level "Work Truck" spec with black body panels, cloth seats and basic amenities to posh "High Country" that has nearly everything other than the kitchen sink thrown at it and enough chrome to blind oncoming drivers.

The Silverado has some tough competition from Ford, which recently revealed its 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine which claims 250 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque and comes under the hood of the 2018 F-150. Ford introduced a first-ever diesel-powered F-150 this year and said it expects to get a highway fuel economy rating of 30 mpg.

GM has not said which transmission will be paired with the 5.3-liter V8.

Inside, the 2019 Silverado interior is very evolutionary from today's truck. The vehicle maintains its familiar boxy cab and wide front fascia.

This was not just the launch of a new truck, but a milestone event in the history of Chevrolet.

On either side of the front grille are small winglets that GM calls "air curtains". The 2019 Silverado has improved aerodynamic efficiency by 7 percent, according to GM.

The 2019 Silverado's suspension is also lighter tanks to new forged-aluminum upper control arms that are lighter.

Last week Detroit's mayor strolled through the still-under-construction spots where General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota and many other automakers will show off their latest creations.

"Chrome has become more polarizing, and more personal, than any other aspect of truck design", said Rich Scheer, director, Exterior Design, Chevrolet Trucks. One in every seven vehicles sold a year ago was a full-size pickup. Both the Silverado 1500-3500 and the Ram 1500-3500 lost ground to the Ford F-Series, which surpassed 896,000 sales in 2017. The system replaces the alternator with a motor and a 48-volt battery pack, which can shut down the truck at stop lights to save fuel and boost acceleration.

Light truck sales made up 63.2 percent of the total US auto industry in 2017.
