On Thursday, 11 of January 2017, Kenya's National Carrier, Kenya Airways marked a great milestone in the history of the airline with the launch of a non-stop flight from Nairobi to NY.

Kenya Airways operates a further 40 routes within Africa from Nairobi.

The national carrier said it expected the flights between Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and New York's JFK Airport to play a critical role in returning it profit making territory.

Henk Graaff, managing director of destination management company SW Africa, said the new flight is fantastic news for Kenya as well as for the entire East African region and the continent.

"The flights will be the fastest connection from East Africa to NY, with 15 hours duration eastbound and 14 hours westbound".

Flight time between Nairobi and NY will be reduced from over 22 hours to 15 hours.

Finally KQ to fly Nairobi-New York direct

Kenya Airways (KQ) has released the tickets for its inaugural flight to the USA on 28 October. Indications of the direct flights could be allowed came to light in February a year ago when Kenya was granted Category One status after officials from the US Federal Aviation Administration gave approval for non-stop direct flights between the two countries.

Kenya Airways will be using its vast African connecting routes to pull passengers to fly direct to the US.

Dreamliner (234 passengers): 204 in Economy and the rest in Business Class.

The chief executive noted the USA is Kenya's top tourist source market, with 95,771 people having visited between January and Oct 2017. This development will most likely enhance trade, tourism and general customer satisfaction.

He added that the airline had confidence in the route, saying "we would not embark on this if we were not confident that it will work".

Kenya Airways was is 2017 named Africa's Leading Airline of the year at the World Travel Awards gala ceremony held in Kigali, Rwanda.
