Skype Update Brings Private Conversations With End-To-End Encryption

Assuming this is true since both partners are regarding it as a new "Private Conversations" feature instead of giving complete blanket coverage.

Microsoft has announced that end-to-end encrypted conversations are coming to Skype.

A Private Conversation will have a lock icon next to your contact's name, and preview messages will not show up in Chats or notifications.

The feature is now available in preview for Skype Insiders.

"We know extra protection is important as you share sensitive information over Skype so we're excited to announce the preview of end-to-end encrypted Private Conversations, available now for Skype Insiders".

The Skype Insider app for Windows, macOS and Linux is available to download on this page, and the Android app can be found in the Google Play Store (Microsoft is no longer accepting beta testers on iOS). If the Private Conversation was started on one device and the user wants to more it to another device, they will need to resend the invitation to the contact using that other device.

Skype had the potential to be what WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are now.

Microsoft also clarified that you can't edit a message or forward files within a Private Conversation.

Whisper's Signal app was originally considered to be one of the more reliable apps to communicate privately between two devices, receiving full marks on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's first scorecard for secure messaging apps. However, the end-to-end goes a step further than this by encrypting stored messages as well.

Microsoft has stated that Private Conversations is a feature that does not support group chat.

There's no word as to when Microsoft expects to roll out end-to-end encryption to all Skype users. Take note that the feature is device-specific.

Deleting a Skype Private Conversation chat window works the same as any other regular chat; right click on desktop/ tap and hold on mobile will display the Delete Chat option.

Skype is rolling out a new feature soon.
