Mets bringing Jay Bruce back for $39 million

Cleveland Indians Jay Bruce answers questions after Game 1 of baseball's American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians Thursday Oct. 5 2017 in Cleveland. The Indians won 4-0

Free agent outfielder Jay Bruce has returned to the New York Mets on a 3-year, $39 million deal, according to multiple reports after spending the end of the season with the Cleveland Indians. He was hitting.254 with 29 home runs and 75 RBI before being traded to the Indians.

Jay Bruce and his proven bat are headed back to the New York Mets.

Bruce also gives the Mets another option at first base, which apparently is needed given their insecurities surrounding youngster Dominic Smith.

The market had screeched to a halt in the last week or so despite a number of big-name free agents still looking for a new home.

Bringing back Bruce though will likely result in the Mets shuffling their outfield just a bit.

Bruce's presence provides some insurance in case Conforto isn't ready at the beginning of the season. First baseman Carlos Santana signed with Philadelphia for $60 million over three years, and closer Wade Davis got $52 million over three years from Colorado.

Mets fans can breathe a sign of relief.

The Giants were reportedly interested in Bruce, but the 30-year-old outfielder wasn't necessarily a great fit for a San Francisco team looking to add power and stay under the competitive balance tax threshold next year. NY picked up Bruce's $13 million option last offseason but immediately began to shop him around.

The following off-season, many questioned whether the Texas native who had previously spent his entire professional career with the Reds could handle the NY spotlight.

With those numbers, it was inevitable that he would be traded at one of the trade deadlines and the Mets pulled off a salary dump move before the waiver trade deadline in August that sent him to the Cleveland Indians.

Terms of the agreement were first reported by ESPN.
