There were 1,750 new flu-associated hospitalizations in OH during the first week of January.

In Dallas County, 18 people have died of the flu, according to Dallas County Health and Human Services.

The most recent update to the Walgreen's Flu Index finds Kentucky ranking at No. 14 for states with the heaviest cases of diagnosed influenza.

A study in Australia found the current flu vaccine was only 10 percent effective against one particular flu strain, known as Influenza A, H3N2. Vaccine effectiveness against other circulating flu viruses has been about 60 percent for H1N1 viruses, and around 50 percent for influenza B viruses.

Use a tissue to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing; avoid using your hands, but if you do, immediately wash or use antibacterial cleanser to help prevent germs from spreading. Chills, body aches, sore throat, coughing and fever are some of the symptoms that the flu can cause.
