Jeff Bezos surpasses Bill Gates' net worth, becomes richest person ever

Move over Bill Gates — Amazon’s Jeff Bezos snags top spot as world’s richest person ever

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bezos' net worth has now surpassed $105 billion - far ahead of the $93.3 billion, $87.2 billion and $77.5 billion net worth of fellow billionaires Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg, respectively. Forbes also put Bezos at the head of the uber-rich class, but cited his net worth at $104.4 billion.

Amazon's share price, and therefore Bezos' net worth, has jumped significantly since September.

Gates, 62, would have a net worth of more than $150 billion if he'd held onto assets that he's given away, largely to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Jeff Bezos is now the richest person of all time. According to CNN, he owns 78.9 million shares of Amazon. Shares of Amazon climbed 1.4% Monday, adding about $1.4 billion to his net worth. The Amazon CEO officially became the first member of the $100 billion club in November, as shares in the company rose significantly during a typically lucrative holiday season.

Bezos' other holdings include the Washington Post and Blue Origin, a private space travel business that intends to take tourists to space. But Forbes reports that Gates' net worth crossed above $100 billion briefly back in April 1999.
