Four powerlifting players were killed and two others injured seriously Sunday after a auto they were travelling in hit road divider and crashed into a roadside pole, police said.

The mishap took place at around 4 am when the sportsmen were returning to Delhi in their Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire vehicle after attending an athletic meet in Panipat.

Bodies of four powerlifting players killed in the national capital were brought to their residence. Yadav 28, had won a gold medal in the 2017 weightlifting championship for India. While another person identified as Rohit (23) suffered minor injuries and is still recuperating at the hospital.

These two were rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh.

A senior police officer said the speed of the auto was very high, adding there were some bottles around and the possibility of drink driving can not be ruled out. Yadav was later shifted to the AIIMS trauma centre in an "extremely critical" condition.

Doctor said that he died at 6:38 pm of a cardiac arrest.

The police said that the other deceased have been identified as Tikamchand alias Tinka (27), Yogesh (24), Saurabh (18), Harish Roy (20). The athlete had sustained grievous head injuries and severe internal bleeding.

The auto, the athletes were travelling in, first hit a road divider before crashing into an electric police, police said. "They were celebrating Rohit's birthday on Saturday and had gone to Karnal (in Haryana)", the officer said. Some liquor bottles were found in the auto.
