The massive Thomas Fire that has been roaring through Ventura County north of Los Angeles grew overnight thanks to increasing winds and forced the temporary closure of the 101 Freeway early this morning between the coastal towns of Carpinteria and Ventura.

"It got a little too intense yesterday with the wind kicking up", he said.

Firefighters continued to battle blazes across a large swath of Southern California on Saturday, and state officials warned that continued high winds into Sunday could create erratic fire conditions, leaving residents with little chance of a reprieve from the flames and smoke that have lasted almost a week. Two remain in the hospital, one in critical condition.

Evacuations were ordered in the area near the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base and schools and casinos were being used as shelters.

Roscomare Rd. will open from Mulholland Sunset Blvd.

The exception to the evacuation order was the Bel- Air Crest housing development, which was not threatened, according to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Twenty-nine horses died at a ranch in Sylmar, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Terrazas warned that the battle was likely to continue until at least Friday.

Authorities issued a purple alert - the highest level warning ever issued in the state - amid what it called "extremely critical fire weather".

Situated on steep terrain near along the Sepulveda Pass, the Skirball Fire has destroyed 12 structures, some of which were large mansions situated near the Getty Center museum. UCLA said classes would resume Friday.

UCLA, Cal State Northridge, Los Angeles Valley College and Santa Monica College canceled classes Thursday.

LAUSD will keep all schools closed its Northeast and Northwest Local Districts.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District closed all of its schools Wednesday and Thursday.

The immediate zone around the building is kept green with fire-resistant plants, and the expansive area surrounding the campus is rigorously kept clear of grasses.

The fire was burning in the same general area as the devastating Bel- Air Fire of 1961. That blaze destroyed about 500 homes and led to various policy changes, including a prohibition on wood-shingle roofs and the strict requirement to remove brush from around properties.
