Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus Are Official With Thin Bezels

Redmi 5

The Redmi 5 will sport a 5.7-inch 18:9 HD display whereas the Redmi 5 Plus comes with 5.9-inch 18:9 full HD display. What's interesting is that the Redmi 5 series is very affordable with a starting price of just 799CNY (about RM493). Both are coupled with an LED flash, but the setup on the back has the fingerprint scanner to keep it company.

The said devices will be available in Blue, Black, Gold and Pink colors. This smartphone will either be shipped with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage or with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Coming to pricing, Redmi 5 starts at 799 yuan (Rs 7,700 approx) for 16GB storage variant, while the 32GB storage model is priced at 899 yuan (Rs 8,700 approx).

These are definitely cheap phones by global standards, then, with the 5 Plus sounding like particularly good value. It packs a 5.7-inch HD+ 18:9 display, and is powered by the power-efficient Snapdragon 450 chipset.

Although the phone comes with Android 7.1.2 Nougat, the user interface is the latest stable MIUI 9 that brings some sweet features like an intelligent assistant and picture-in-picture mode. The Redmi 5 Plus is priced at CNY 999 (roughly Rs 9,700) for the 3GB/32GB variant, while the 4GB/64GB variant retails for CNY 1,299 (roughly Rs. 12,700). Its connectivity features will be same as Xiaomi Redmi 5.

They're obviously not quite as thin as the Mi MIX 2 display borders, but they're slim enough to help squeeze a large 5.7-inch panel into a premium metal package measuring 151.8 mm tall and 72.8 mm wide. The handset is powered by the Snapdragon 625 chipset, and boasts a 4,000mAh battery that can easily last two days of intensive usage. It has a 12-megapixel rear sensor and a 5-megapixel shooter on the front. The phones have an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyro, hall sensor, and a proximity sensor. The Redmi 5 Plus comes with a 4000mAh battery that Xiaomi claims will provide 17 days of standby time and over two days of usage. Customers will be able to choose between a version that includes 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage and a variant that includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Xiaomi took the wraps off its Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones which feature 18:9 displays in a minimal bezeled handset with rounded edges.
