Brush Fire Erupts Along 405 Freeway In Sepulveda Pass

Fire officials say 700 homes have been evacuated, along with an apartment building.

The fire was first reported around 5 a.m. local time Wednesday east of the 405 and north of Sunset Boulevard.

The Thomas Fire jumped to thousands of acres with startling speed as Santa Ana winds, blowing as fast as 35 to 50 miles per hour, carried its embers. By mid-morning, the size had grown to about 150 acres.

All Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District schools will be closed Wednesday due to new fire developments. The fire is northeast of the Getty Center and east of the San Diego Freeway.

Simultaneously, other wildfires are blazing in different parts of the Southland including the 65,000-acre Thomas fire in Ventura County, the 11,000-acre Creek fire near Sylmar and Lake View Terrace and the 7,000-acre Rye fire in Santa Clarita area, ABC7 reported.

They have also been posting images of the inferno as it devastates Los Angeles.

No evacuation orders were officially in place, however residents should be prepared to get out quickly, Stewart said. All North Bound lanes of the 405 are closed in the area.

Citywide, about 600 officers were assigned to coordinate security and various "firefighting events, " Beck said.
