"Fishermen are advised to return back to the coast and are advised not to go out in the sea during next 48 hours", reads the statement.

As a precautionary measure, the Maharashtra government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in four districts.

With cyclone Ockhi inching towards Gujarat after creating havoc in parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he is constantly monitoring the situation in various states.

The poll panel asked B B Swain to make "adequate, effective and fool-proof arrangements" for the smooth conduct of first phase polling for state Assembly elections on Saturday. "The intensity of rains will increase as the cyclone approaches", the official said.

In light of cyclone Ockhi hitting the city, the Mumbai Disaster management unit of the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has issued a warning against visiting beaches since there is a high tide alert. The BJP has also called off rallies and press conferences of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Surat. Shah's poll rallies scheduled today in Rajula town of Amreli and Mahuva and Shihor of Bhavnagar district have been cancelled, a party release said.

The latest weather forecast said cyclone Ockhi has moved closer to the southern coast and is about 390 kms from Surat.

As Cyclone Ockhi threatened the Gujarat coast on Tuesday, more than 5,000 people were shifted to safer locations and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams deployed in vulnerable places.
