The biggest win of his career by far, Ali earned the WBO world super welterweight title by playing spoiler and has certainly opened up great opportunities for himself going forward.

Cotto, who won six titles in four different weight classes in his career, didn't make excuses for the outcome. "I would have to say my whole career has been incredible for me", said Cotto.

Cotto fell to 41-6 with 33 wins inside the distance. He suffered an injury to his left biceps in the seventh round at Madison Square Garden (MSG) and struggled to make an impact in the fight.

"I worked hard for it", said Ali, who won by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113.

"I want to thank Team Cotto for giving me this opportunity", Ali said. "I'm so glad to call Madison Square Garden my home". Cotto looked a bit awkward trying to corral Ali, and the latter made him pay in the second round with a crushing right to the jaw that clearly hurt Cotto. They could have taken an easier fight if they wanted too. Ali turned in strong rounds in the ninth, 10th and 11th, looking more aggressive and fresher than Cotto.

Cotto continued to apply pressure in the seventh, but said that "something happened" to his left biceps in the round.

But Ali looked strong, fast and determined against Cotto, as he dropped Cotto to 8-2 at the Garden and 20-6 in world title fights, many of them among the most memorable in recent boxing history.

Cotto again appeared to be hurt in the fourth round, by a left hook, but he regrouped enough to connect with his best punch of the night, an overhand right, in the sixth, which he caused Ali to take a bunny hop backward.

Cotto's last fight is being shown by Box Nation, with coverage getting underway at 2am (Sunday morning).

"I've been fighting since I was eight years old, and I've been in big arenas". Sadam won the fight.

Unless Cotto yields to some unforeseen urge to withdraw his pledge to stay retired, his legacy shall forever remain beyond reproach or cause for sympathetic tsk-tsks.

He was also beaten once by Margarito, while his other defeats came at the hands of American Floyd Mayweather, Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Sometimes the burglars sneak up incrementally, taking advantage of an older fighter's loss of reaction time that can be measured in tenths, if not hundredths, of seconds. With Ali widely viewed as a designated victim, that might have contributed to Cotto's farewell fight playing to more empty seats than he has been accustomed to in a city that has more residents of Puerto Rican descent than San Juan. The Mexican champion improved to 31-0, while Negrete, of Colombia, lost for the first time in 18 bouts.

"It's taken me five years to get here, and I'm cherishing this moment for me and for Puerto Rico", said Acosta.
