Ericsson keeps seat at Sauber for 2018 alongside Leclerc

New-look Sauber sign rookie Leclerc

The line-up was announced at a special press event in Milan, Italy on Saturday, where the team revealed further details of their new title sponsorship deal with Alfa Romeo, including a revised red and white livery concept for next season's vehicle and a new logo.

That deal, marking the return of the historic Alfa Romeo name to Formula One after a more than 30-year absence, was announced earlier in the week.

The 20-year-old from Monaco, a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, will take Pascal Wehrlein's place behind the wheel next season as Sauber team up with Alfa Romeo.

However, Ericsson's future had been in doubt after he ended the season as the only driver to compete in every race without scoring a point.

The vehicle is predominantly white with red accents, and large Alfa Romeo logos after the Swiss team confirmed a deal with the manufacturer.

"The motor we use will be the same one Ferrari use", Marchionne said.

Marchionne, who is also the chairman of Sauber's engine suppliers Ferrari, is attempting to reshape the Alfa Romeo brand and the title sponsorship of Sauber is part of that.

"Now there is the additional benefit that when we sit down at the table to discuss the future of Formula One, we're playing two marques", he told reporters.

Sauber finished last in the constructors' championship for the first time in their history in 2017.

"For now I'm a Ferrari fan, but if Alfa Romeo Sauber do well that would of course be very welcome", Marchionne said. Ferrari celebrated the 70th anniversary of his first auto this year.
