Uttar Pradesh, Delhi topped crime list in 2016, says NCRB

The NCRB report also first time included the statistics on the seizures of arms, ammunitions, drugs and currency by central armed police forces - the CISF, the BSF, the CRPF, the SSB, the Assam Rifles - and central police organisations like the National Investigation Agency.

In addition, among the 19 major cities, Delhi also reported 38.8 per cent of total IPC criminal cases, followed by Bengaluru at 8.9 per cent and Mumbai at 7.7 per cent. Delhi has the distinction of the highest crime rate of 182.1 as compared to the national average of 77.2. In the crimes against children, 145 cases were of kidnapping or abduction, 46 were of compelling girls for marriage. This alone increased the total number of violent crimes in 2016 as compared to past year, by 0.8%.

In Telangana, stringent measures taken for the safety and security of the women has led to a 20 per cent dip in crime against the women, an official said.

Delhi registered 40 per cent (1,996) of the total number of rape cases in the 19 cities and almost 29 per cent cases each of cruelty meted out by husband and his relatives and dowry deaths across the country.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh followed by UP reported maximum number of rape cases by women. All 114 persons arrested for crimes against children were chargesheeted.

Total 84,746 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty were reported in 2016. As many as 1,847 cases of crime against children cases were reported in the State in 2016, including 54 murders. Cases under dacoity have decreased by 4.5 per cent in 2015-16 with 3,795 cases in 2016 as compared to 3,972 in 2015. In Crime against women, Delhi reported highest crime rate of 160.4 in comparison to national average rate of 55.2.

According to the NCRB data of 2016, 1,382 incidents of violence against senior citizens were reported in the state in 2016.

However, a total of 15,379 persons were trafficked during the year including 58.7% children.

Delhi reported 33 percent (13,803 cases of the total 41,761 cases in 19 cities with a population above two million) of total crimes against women and was followed by Mumbai at 12.3 percent (5,128 cases).

Madhya Pradesh also headed the list of states for atrocities, crime against Scheduled Tribes with 1,823 cases (27.8%), followed by Rajasthan (18.2%) with 1,195 cases and Odisha (10.4%) with 681 cases during 2016. "Majority of cases under crimes against women were reported under "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" (32.6%) followed by "Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty" (25.0%), "Kidnaping & Abduction of Women" (19.0%) and "Rape" (11.5%)".
