Drinking Four Cups Of Coffee A Day May Have Health Benefits

Three to four cups a day cuts the risk of heart disease by 15 per cent and an early death by 17 per cent

Drinking three to four cups of coffee a day can lead to a lower death risk and getting a heart disease compared with drinking no coffee.

The researchers concluded that coffee drinking "seems safe within usual patterns of consumption, except during pregnancy and in women at increased risk of fracture". It also decreases the risks of liver diseases, diabetes, some cancers, and dementia.

As a disclaimer, the researchers also said that people shouldn't drink coffee as a way to prevent disease or cure illnesses.

To better understand the effects of the most commonly consumed beverage on health, the research reviewed aggregated data from 201 studies that also included clinical trials across all countries.

A lot has been said about the health implications of coffee-drinking, but the latest research suggests three to four cups a day could be good for you. "There is a balance of risks in life, and the benefits of moderate consumption of coffee seem to outweigh the risks".

"But there is the possibility that the association with better health is due to something else that coffee drinkers are more likely to do".

While most researchers can not agree on a definitive list to detail the benefits of coffee, they point out that three cups a day is a safe bet. Filtered was shown to have no effect on blood cholesterol levels while unfiltered coffee does.

Researchers warned that drinking coffee could be bad for pregnant women and added that it was also linked to a very small increased risk of fracture in women.

Further research may now be needed to determine whether the relationship highlighted by this study is a causal one.

But, this news might not be strong enough to start a coffee habit. Increasing consumption to above three cups a day was not associated with harm, but the beneficial effect was less pronounced.

"This paper should not be interpreted as meaning we should all drink coffee for good health, because it is not possible to directly make the link with this kind of study, and because there are too many lifestyle and other confounding factors". "That may be a simple question, but as with most things dietary related, there isn't a simple answer", said Dr Amelia Lake of Teesside University.
