Congress Leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi Who Was Hospitalised Since 2008 Dies

Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who was in coma since 2008, died on Monday at Apollo Hospital here, doctors said. He made major contributions in professionalising football in the nation and beginning the National Football League. He was hospitalised since then.

Indian football fraternity also mourned the death of former AIFF President Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who served in the position for almost two decades.

The news was confirmed by West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Dasmunshi, also a diabetic, suffered the heart attack the same year in July on way to Kolkata from Malda district in northwest Bengal, after attending a Congress party meeting.

After serving as a match commissioner at the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi went on to perform the role in the Spain-Tunisia group stage game at the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

According to hospital sources, his family members including wife Deepa Dasmunsi and their son were at his bedside at that time. Later he was shifted to home, and in 2009 he was admitted to Apollo Hospital here. "His death is an irreparable loss and I pray for peace for his soul and family", said Sonia Gandhi.

He was the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) till his untimely stroke in 2008, following which Praful Patel took over as the president of the Indian football governing body.

He was sworn in as Union Minister of State, Commerce in 1985. In matters political, or personal, I used to seek his guidance on nearly everything, " said Subrata Mukherjee, the senior most minister in Mamata Banerjee's cabinet.

Dasmunsi suffered a massive stroke and was paralysed in October 2008, after which he slipped into coma.

72-year-old Munsi had represented West Bengal's Lok Sabha constituency Raiganj. He was the I&B Minister during Monmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance government.
