Vijayawada 16 dead seven missing as boat capsizes

At least 14 people have been killed after a boat capsized in Krishna river of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. Unconfirmed reports suggest that another seven persons were feared dead.

The NDRF said three teams of it are now performing operation. They all belonged to Prakasam and Nellore districts. According to IANS, there were 38 tourists on the boat belonging to a private operator.

The boat began shaking while attempting to turn towards Pavitra Sangamam after leaving the Ferry and subsequently turned turtle, trapping the passengers underneath it. He said an enquiry has been constituted.

The boat was navigating the Krishna river. About seven feet water is there in the river. As many as 20 passengers wearing life jackets were brought ashore with the help of trained swimmers and local fishermen.

The passengers were making a trip from Punnami Ghat in Bhavanipuram to Pavitra Sangamam in Ferry village when the vessel capsized, PTI quoted an official as saying. The overloaded boat capsized midway due to the weight of38 passengers, he further added. Bad light is understood to have hampered the rescue operations.

The boat's carrying capacity is 24 people.

Twenty of the roughly 35 people on the boat were rescued and the search operations were ongoing, India's National Disaster Response Force said on Twitter. He announced Rs 8 lakh compensation each to the families of the deceased. The number of deaths may increase as another 10 people were yet to be traced out.
