First image of Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who revealed

The Doctor will see you now! BBC unveils FIRST LOOK at glam Jodie Whittaker as the new Time Lord... as she struts sultrily away from the TARDIS across a sunlit meadow

So when Jodie Whittaker makes her debut as the Thirteenth Doctor next month, she'll literally be wearing Peter Capaldi's pants.

The BBC has revealed the Doctor's new look ahead of Jodie Whittaker taking over the iconic sci-fi role as the first woman to play the character. Whittaker is wearing a long coat, high-waisted trousers, boots, suspenders, and a navy shirt with a few stripes running across it.

Throw in some sturdy boots, and this Doctor means business (and, we may add, is rather stylish). And it seems well-received by fans, who thought her costume looked fantastic.

Released this morning via the Beeb's official Doctor Who Twitter account, the unexpected image quickly gained global attention. Will she welcome her new companions, or shut them out?

"Definitely dig the outfit for the new Doctor, in particular the pinstripes", tweeted Ken Widdoes of British Columbia.

And the stripes on the jumper could be seen as a nod to those on the striped scarf won by Tom Baker's Doctor. Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor was a fan of suspenders, although some are attributing that touch to another famous alien.

"It's more than an honour to play the Doctor", Whittaker told the BBC about being selected earlier in the summer.

Whittaker takes over from the exiting Peter Capaldi, whose last stand (and Whittaker's first) will be a Doctor Who Christmas Special this Christmas.

It's not gone unnoticed by fans with one saying it "has great elements from previous Doctors". And yet, this is an outfit that, while new, instantly screams "The Doctor", and it's one that you might just see a whole lot more of come the next comic-con season.
