Anupam Kher is the new FTII Chairman; replaces controversial Gajendra Chauhan

Kher said Indian filmmakers were returning to the'simplicity of stars like Basu Chatterjee

"I will perform my duties to the best of my abilities", Kher tweeted in his response.

The previous appointment of FTII chairman by the central government had caused considerable controversy with students on the campus refusing to let Gajendra Chauhan function in his role. He also has his own acting institute Actor Prepares.

Former FT II chairman, Gajendra Chauhan, congratulations Kher on being appointed as chairman. However, we are sure that he would do a commendable job and with his experience, commitment, dedication, and charisma the students of FTII will definitely be rewarded.

What truly separates Kher from many of his contemporaries is the ease with which he blended into the "actor-star" persona.

Chauhans appointment in 2015 had sparked an outrage among the students of the premier film institute. His term had ended in March. His appointment had triggered student protests at the Pune-based institute. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit extended his good wishes to the 62-year-old and said, "Kher sahab has a great body of work in the Indian as well as the global cinema. But certainly FTII needs somebody who is much more qualified than whatever Ganjendraji's qualifications are coming across".

He has also worked in global projects like "Bend It Like Beckham", "Bride and Prejudice", "Speedy Singhs", "The Mistress of Spices", "Lust, Caution" and the Academy Award winning "Silver Linings Playbook".

Some of Kher's prominent films include Saaransh, Daddy, Lamhe, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara, Khosla Ka Ghosla and A Wednesday.

Kher has appeared in over 500 films and has also been the recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts.
